About used pumpers & engines

Buying guidance

A pumper is the truck most departments build their response around, and it is the most common apparatus on Fire Truck Mall. Buying used is as much about time as money: a new build can take a year or more to arrive, while a truck already on the lot can be inspected, serviced and put in service in a fraction of that. Brindlee Mountain moves more than 500 used units a year, so the engines listed here turn over quickly.

Start where most buyers start — pump capacity in gallons per minute, water tank size, and whether the truck carries a foam proportioning system. From there the choice is usually the chassis. A commercial chassis such as a Freightliner or International keeps price and upkeep familiar for rural and volunteer departments, while a custom cab from Pierce, E-ONE, Spartan or KME buys crew room and a purpose-built fire chassis. Read engine hours alongside mileage, because a pumper can pump and idle for years without adding miles to the odometer, and ask for a recent pump test and the maintenance file.

Filter by price, year, state, pump size or tank size, and save the search so Firetruck Finder tells you when a matching engine is listed. If the truck needs paint, new graphics or a full refurbishment before it goes in service, that can be done before delivery — and the engine you are replacing can be quoted as a trade.
