Rescue trucks are bought for what they carry. Extrication tools, lifting bags, cribbing, rope and hazmat gear all need somewhere to live, so the body and its compartments matter more here than on almost any other apparatus. This category runs from walk-in and non-walk-in heavy rescues through medium rescues to squads that put a crew and a tool complement on a commercial chassis.

A compact rescue body of ten to twelve feet on a Ford, RAM or Chevrolet chassis will carry hydraulic tools, lifting bags and a portable generator for most departments. A walk-in heavy rescue is a different purchase, with the electrical system, light tower and cord reels to match. Compare the compartment layout against the equipment you already own, and check generator hours as carefully as engine hours.

Ask what comes with the truck — rescues are often sold with some equipment in place, and photographs do not always make clear what is included in the sale.
